Design fees can be charged either hourly or (more commonly) as a fixed percentage of the overall project budget. Hourly services are often used for smaller jobs such as colour consultations and simple room designs. The fixed percentage is more often used for major projects and renovations and can fluctuate based on the scope of work provided. In either instance, I review the budget with clients constantly so there are no surprises.
Your home is yours (not mine) and the design should reflect your family's style and personal taste. I utilize tools such as inspiration boards and provide material samples from my suppliers to ensure the design is fully aligned with your expectation and style. Of course, some clients prefer to take a more hands-off approach and want to experience that TV show style reveal - if that is more you, we can do that too! I would encourage you to check out my client testimonials to learn more about how I interact and work with my clients.
I will probably turn that question around and ask you what your key project goals are? This will allow us to work on the design budget together and jointly prioritize what will give the desired result as well as the most value for your dollar.
With larger projects, I will prioritize what needs to be done first in order for other layers to be completed. Lastly, there is always the option to break a large project into phases, allowing the client the flexibility to both finance and re-prioritize as each phase is completed.
Each and every project is different so timelines can vary, however, it is never too early to start the planning process. Typically, contractors book jobs months in advance. Beginning the design process early helps ensure that your renovation can begin within your desired timeframe. Sourcing and plan for your renovation in advance so that materials and drawings are complete is also important to keep the process moving efficiently. Many of my clients find my project management services most beneficial for this very reason.
This is a very common question. Part of the design consultation is dedicated to identifying the tastes and style preferences of my clients. This is done by asking questions, and more importantly, listening to their answers. Not all clients know how to "label" their taste preferences, yet almost all can tell me what they like or dislike about their home, as well as what they are hoping to accomplish with their project. Based on their answers I will build a design inspiration board and present material samples prior to completing the full design.
The answer is yes, of course! The design process is meant to identify what you love about your home and what you want to love even more! Many of my clients keep existing furniture, fixtures or pieces of art and I often build the design around these pieces. From time-to-time (and with client approval) I may re-frame a piece of art or recover tired looking furniture in order to better align with the overall design and breathe new life into the cherished piece.
